Equanil (generically known as meprobate) is a medication used to manage the symptoms of anxiety disorder. According to Drugs.com, Equanil balances the neurotransmitters (chemicals) in your brain to decrease nervousness and tension. Typically, your doctor will prescribe anywhere from 1,200 to 1,600mg of Equanil a day.
Common Side Effects
According to MedlinePlus, common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness and headaches. It can also cause stomach problems, lack of coordination and euphoria. Tell your doctor if these side effects last for at least three days. These side effects are not life-threatening, but can become very bothersome and affect your quality of life.
Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com says that Equanil's dangerous side effects include a fever, skin rash, tachycardia (fast heartbeat), arrythmias (irregular heartbeats) and unusual behavior. According to MedlinePlus, Equanil can also cause epistaxis (nosebleeds), easy bruising, a skin rash, trouble breathing and slurred speech. Other serious side effects include trouble walking, palpitations (pounding heartbeat), a sore throat and bleeding. Equanil can also cause cause itching and petechiae (small purple spots on your skin). Tell your doctor immediately when you have these effects.
The National Library of Medicine says that Equanil can cause chills, oliguria (decreased urine production), anuria (lack of urine production) or proctitis (inflammation of your rectum).
Warnings
Do not take Equanil if you have any allergies to its ingredients. You may develop difficulty breathing, hives and swelling of your face, throat and lips. Get help immediately.
Avoid Equanil if you have a history of substance or alcohol abuse. According to the National Library of Medicine, you may become psychologically or physically dependent on Equanil.
You should not use Equanil if you are pregnant. The National Library of Medicine says that using Equanil during the first three months of pregnancy can lead to birth defects in your unborn child.
You should not breastfeed while taking Equanil. According to the National Library of Medicine, Equanil can pass through your placenta, contaminate your umbilical cord blood and pass into breast milk.
Drugs.com says that you should avoid sleeping pills, tranquilizers and sedatives, as the combination can make you extremely drowsy.
