Antioxidants are a great way to treat wrinkles. Antioxidants are powerful free radical fighters. Too many free radicals in your body attack your skin, leading to the breakdown of elastin and collagen, according to a 2007 article in "Science Daily" magazine. The lack of elastin fibers and collagen is the reason wrinkles occur. Damage from the sun in the form of ultraviolet radiation increases free radicals, but antioxidants in food and eye creams are an effective wrinkle treatment. Avoiding UV rays also helps, as does lowering your stress.
Step 1
Use an eye cream with antioxidants. Try Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Gold Ultra Lift and Strengthening Eye Capsules, as recommended in a "Good Housekeeping" magazine article called "The No-Knife Eye Lift." Apply the eye cream carefully. Start at the inside corner of one eye and dab the cream onto the skin. Work around the eye to the outer portion.
Step 2
Use a facial cream with antioxidants. Try Organic Acai Berry Antioxidant Facial Cream or Herbal Choice's Anti-X Cream. Use the cream once in the morning and once at night after washing your face.
Step 3
Eat foods high in antioxidants. Include eight to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Antioxidant-enriched foods slow the aging process and reduce wrinkles, says June Breiner, M.D. in an article, "13 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles." Seven strawberries, 1 medium pear, 2 slices of mango and 1 tbsp. of raisins are all examples of a single serving of fruit. An avocado, 3 celery sticks, 7 cherry tomatoes and 14 mushrooms count as one serving of vegetables. See the Resource section below for more serving information.
Step 4
Lower your stress. Stress causes the body to release the hormone cortisol, which advances aging, says Scott Gerrish, M.D., a non-surgical skin care specialist. Try taking a yoga class. Meditation, exercise, and hobbies can also reduce your stress and reduce wrinkles.
Step 5
Stay out of the sun. Avoid damaging UV rays. Use a hat or visor to protect your face, and wear an SPF 15 or greater sunscreen. Sunglasses can further protect your eyes from wrinkles and reduce squinting, which contributes to wrinkling of the skin around your eyes.
Tips and Warnings
- Quit smoking and stay away from places where people smoke. Cigarette smoke creates more free radicals in your body. How much smoke you are exposed to and how long you smoke for correlate with more premature wrinkles.
