How to Get Rid of Dry Scalp Naturally

A dry scalp can create itching, irritation and flaking of the scalp and it is caused by a variety of factors. Such causes include: dandruff (fungus), overuse of hair products, dehydration, bad eating habits and pollution, according to Oregon State University Student Health Services. Dry scalp is usually not visibly noticed until dry skin flakes are sloughed off onto clothing, making it an embarrassing problem. Over-the-counter treatments for dry scalp can be expensive and only a temporary fix, while natural remedies done at home can be just as effective at eliminating dry scalp.

Step 1

Mix equal parts of table salt and a gentle shampoo together and rub onto scalp. Massage salt and shampoo mixture on scalp for several minutes to improve circulation and slough off the dry skin. Rinse with warm water.

Step 2

Create a mixture of 1/8 cup olive oil with 1/8 cup almond oil. Rub oil into hair, massaging your scalp for a few minutes. Wrap your scalp in plastic wrap and place a warm, wet towel over the plastic wrap, allowing the oils to condition and moisturize the dry scalp. Leave the oil on your scalp for 15 to 20 minutes and then wash out the oil by shampooing once or twice. Condition your hair and scalp with a good moisturizing conditioner and then rinse with lukewarm or cool water.

Step 3

Mix 2 tbsp. of white vinegar with 1 cup of water and pour onto scalp and hair, massaging your scalp. Rinse with cool water and let your hair dry naturally. The white vinegar removes excess soap and hair products from scalp and hair, leaving it clean and shiny.

Tips and Warnings

  • Increase your water intake. Eat a balanced diet. Avoid shampoos containing sodium laureth sulphate. Brush hair frequently to remove dry flakes. Eat foods rich in vitamins C and B to promote healthy skin and hair. Avoid using alkaline shampoos which can be drying. Do not wash hair in hot water. Avoid excessive blow-drying and let hair dry naturally when possible.
