Hair Growing Products for Black Hair

Ultimately, black hair growth is best encouraged through proper maintenance of healthy hair and scalp. Though beauty supply shelves are lined with products promising to stimulate hair growth, the rate of growth is determined by proper care and hereditary predisposition. Cathy Howse, an expert in black hair care and the founder of Ultra Black Hair Products, outlines the importance of such maintenance in her book "Ultimate Black Hair Growth 2."

Shampoos

A clean and healthy scalp is the basis of optimal hair growth. According to the "Hair & Skin Care for African American & Biracial Children Workbook," a shampoo that promotes black hair growth should not include isopropyl alcohol, propylene glycol, mineral oil or petroleum, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, chlorine, diethanolamine, momoethnanolamine, triethanolamin or imidazolidinyl urea DMDM hydantoin.

Conditioners

A penetrating conditioner should be used after every shampoo. Especially if the conditioner is made from an animal protein such as keratin, it is more easily absorbed into the hair shaft, contributing to the overall health of the hair. The conditioner should be left on the hair for 15 minutes.

Moisturizers and oils

Replenishing lost moisture and oil is key for maintaining the health of black hair. A high quality oil may provide some nutrients that support overall hair follicle health. The "Hair & Skin Care for African American & Biracial Children Workbook" suggests that oils containing herbs such as sage, rosemary, almond or lavender may provide additional benefits to hair and scalp health.
