How to Erase Dark Circles Under the Eyes

According to "The New York Times," more than 50 percent of women say under-eye circles are a major beauty concern. A number of factors cause or worsen dark circles, and despite the many advances in the beauty industry, there is no single cream or product that can make them completely disappear. Instead, it's the combination of lifestyle changes and product usage that produces the best results.

Step 1

Check with your doctor if you have frequent nasal congestion or allergies. The Mayo Clinic identifies these are two of the main causes of under-eye circles. You can also try over-the-counter medicines to relieve nasal congestion, or make your own version by mixing a cup of warm water with 1/8 tsp. of salt.

Step 2

Reduce your sodium intake, as this can cause water retention, which shows as dark circles under the eyes. Sodium is present in a number of items, including canned vegetables, fast food and even sauces and salad dressings. To prevent water from pooling under the eyes, always use a thick pillow.

Step 3

Apply a cold compress made of two used teabags cooled in the fridge. You can also use a wet rag that has been left in the fridge for a few minutes or even a bag of frozen peas or corn wrapped in a towel.

Step 4

Look for creams that contain one or, preferably, all of these ingredients: vitamins C, E and K as well as retinol. Apply as needed or instructed by the makers. Most will require you to apply the cream at night, before bed.

Step 5

Get plenty of rest and water. Lack of sleep doesn't cause dark circles, but it makes them more obvious, since your skin is paler when you are tired. Dehydration also makes blemishes and skin problems more obvious. Also, the less you drink, the more your body retains water (as a way of protecting itself), making your eyes puffy in the process.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
  • 2 used tea bags
