5 Things You Need to Know About Using Shiatsu For Golfer's Elbow

1. Golfer's Elbow vs. Tennis Elbow

While tennis elbow is a form of tendonitis, or inflamed tendons on the outside of the elbow, golfer's elbow affects the inner tendons. The causes of golfer's elbow include repetitive strain on the muscles of the forearm which eventually cause tearing and inflammation at the attachment point on the inner elbow. Golfer's elbow usually causes pain in the elbow joint and inside of the forearm, often with shooting pains from the elbow to the wrist when gripping objects.

2. It's All in the Finger Pressure

Shiatsu is an ancient form of acupressure massage which is based on multiple Japanese healing principles. By using finger pressure on specific acupressure points in the body, tension is released in the tendons and muscles which in turn reduces inflammation and swelling and alleviates pain. With a few basic techniques, you can use shiatsu as self-treatment for golfer's elbow symptoms, increasing the flow of energy in your hand and forearm.

3. Pinpointing Pressure Points

Pressure points are located in the same locations on all bodies; however, they can be quite elusive as you begin your self-shiatsu treatment. When trying to pinpoint a pressure point, try to locate areas which seem either hollow or dense in comparison to surrounding tissue. Additionally, pressure points not only feel different as you touch with your fingers, they often feel different to you physically and may be more sensitive to pressure. It may take some time to get accustomed to finding pressure points, so be patient and use your intuition.

4. Shiatsu for a Stiff Elbow

Locate a pressure point on the underside of the upper arm about 1 finger width above the tip of the elbow. Hold this pressure point with your index and middle fingers for at least one minute, applying comfortable pressure. This pressure point should help to relieve stiffness in the elbow, reducing pain in the forearm. A pressure point located about 2 finger widths above the fold of the wrist on the upper arm, between the 2 forearm bones, is thought to strengthen tendons and relax the muscles of the lower arm. Hold a firm, steady pressure with your index and middle fingers for at least 1 minute to relieve the pain of golfer's elbow.

5. A Complimentary Treatment

Shiatsu can help to compliment your doctor recommended treatment for golfer's elbow, speeding healing and reducing pain. Shiatsu can even be used as a preventive measure to reduce your chances of a future injury. However, shiatsu is by no means a replacement to your doctor's orders.
