The Best Way to Grow Hair Out

There are many different ways to grow hair out, but the one thing that they all have in common is that they require patience. Hair grows about half an inch each month, so growing out bangs or a pixie cut takes a commitment of time. Some people attempt to grow their hair out as quickly as possible. They have an idea of the style they want, and put up with floppy, overgrown hair until they get there. While this will work, it is possible to grow your hair out with a minimum amount of aggravation or bad hair days.

Step 1

Treat your hair gently. A new hair replaces every hair that you lose, growing from the scalp at the rate of half inch a month. So the best way to grow out hair quickly is to hang onto the hair that you already have. Try to minimize the amount of heat styling that you do, comb your hair gently with a wide tooth comb and towel dry it by squeezing gently, not rubbing it vigorously or wrapping it in a towel.

Step 2

Use hair accessories wisely. Whether you are growing out bangs or all of your hair, there will come a time when you will have curls, cowlicks or pieces of hair that don't want to cooperate. This is often the point when people become frustrated and head to the hairdresser. The good news is that, if you can make it through these periods, the hair continues to grow and the problem goes away. To make it through these difficult periods, use hair clips, headbands and other accessories to control the problem areas.

Step 3

Get frequent trims. It is tempting to avoid haircuts so that you don't snip off any of that hard-earned hair; however, regular trims can make the hair look better, feel better and grow faster. The hair will look better because a skilled hairdresser can make subtle adjustments with each trim to add shape and movement. Your hair will feel better because you can tell your hairdresser the spots that give you problems and she can make adjustments. Your hair will grow faster because your hairdresser will snip off split ends, which, if they remain, will spread up the entire length of the hair strand.
