5 Things You Need to Know About Choosing Camping Equipment

1. Get a Roof Over Your Head

Choose a tent large enough for you and your companions to sleep in and store your bags. There are many sizes on the market. If you are going backpacking, get a small tent that is light to carry. If you are camping with your family, a larger tent suits your needs. The tent protects you from the sun, wind and rain. It provides a place for you to sleep out of the elements of nature. Tents range in price, and they are available at a variety of sporting goods stores and consumer superstores.

2. Eating and Drinking

Pick a stove to cook your food. These range in size from a small one-burner cooker to a tabletop two-burner mini-stovetop. They run on propane usually and are very convenient when camping. You will need to gather pans and cooking utensils, plates and eating utensils as well. Stores carry a variety of stainless steel, plastic and paper materials. Get a cooler if you need to keep food or drinks cold. These are available at sporting goods store and consumer superstores.

3. Get Some Sleep

Choose the right sleeping bag for the weather. If you are backpacking, choose a lightweight material. These are more expensive but are worth it in the cold. If you are going in the summer, a warm-weather sleeping bag may be necessary.

4. Tools for a Fire

Build a fire in the designated fire ring or pit at your campsite. You will need to get an ax to chop firewood, or if the campsite sells wood, you can buy it. Gather sticks and twigs to get starter wood for the fire. Lay these in the fire pit. Use newspaper and matches to ignite the starter wood and then lay logs on top to start the main fire.

5. Choosing the Right Lantern

A propane lantern will work the best camping. They are lightweight, and the small propane tank is easy to replace. The propane tanks are universal to the lanterns. Purchase a lantern at your local sporting goods store or consumer superstore. The lanterns may have different mantels, and some lanterns have an adjustable setting for brightness.
