How to Make Your Nails Strong

Thin and weak nails can prove problematic if you are trying to grow out your nails. Making your nails stronger can help you avoid problems with cracking and splitting. A part of keeping your nails strong is to avoid infections. Protect your nails by not sharing any of your nail care tools, like emery boards, with others. Also, when you visit a salon, make sure that they clean and sanitize all of their tools.

Step 1

Use a hand cream twice a day. Use a generous amount of hand cream around the nails as well as one the nail bed. This can help keep the nails hydrated, which can keep them strong. One example of a product you can try is Vaseline Intensive Care Health Hand & Nails Cream.

Step 2

Massage the nails with cuticle oil. Each night before bed, massage your nails with cuticle oil enriched with vitamin E. This product nourishes and moisturizes the nails in order to keep them strong. Opi Avoplex Cuticle to Go is an example of a cuticle oil with vitamin E and other nutrients for nail growth.

Step 3

Apply a hardening coat of nail polish. A hardener can protect the nails as well as strengthen them in order to help them grow. Sally Hansen makes a Hard as Nails line of polishes that you can try. If you don't have a hardening nail polish available, you should still apply at least a clear coat for protection.

Step 4

Wear gloves during cleaning. Household cleaning products and detergents can weaken the nails. Each time that you are exposed to these chemicals, make sure you put on rubber gloves.

Step 5

File your nails in a rounded shape. Oval shaped nails are less likely to break since they are not pointy like straight nails. When you file, go in a single direction. Going back and forth with the nail file can weaken the nails.
