Chlorhexidine (Chlorhexidine gluconate) is a germicidal cleanser and an antibacterial dental rinse. The cleanser is used topically as an antiseptic and disinfectant, and the dental rinse is used orally to treat various dental conditions. Chlorhexidine cleanser is available over the counter (Hibiclens or Hibistat), while the dental rinse is available by prescription (Peridex or Periogaurd). Side Effects of Chlorhexidine Topical Cleanser

Side Effects of Chlorhexidine Dental Rinse

In some cases, severe side effects may occur and medical attention should be pursued immediately. Severe side effects include: allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth face, lips or tongue, difficulty breathing), mouth sore or numbness, tingling or swelling of the mouth.

Other Considerations
