Skin is an elastic, pliable tissue that encompasses the entire body. Its main function is to house bones, muscles, connective tissue and internal fluids. Over the course of time, the skin can become lax and start to sag. Although this is not life threatening, it can definitely cause a hit to your self confidence. To avoid this from happening, there are several preventive steps you can take.
Step 1
Be patient if you are trying to lose weight. When you lose weight in a hurry, your skin has a tendency to stay stretched out. Aim for a one to two pound per week weight loss if you are overweight and you want to prevent sagging.
Step 2
Consume foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, protein and complex carbs to promote healthy skin. Nuts, seeds, avocados, lean beef, chicken breasts, cold water fish, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans are examples of these. Stay away from foods that are high in saturated fat and processed sugars like fast food, deep fried foods, commercial baked goods and sweets.
Step 3
Hydrate your skin from the inside by drinking at least 8 cups of water daily. Avoid beverages that can cause dehydration like coffee, tea, frappuccinos, lattes, soda and energy drinks.
Step 4
Keep your skin well conditioned by applying a daily moisturizer. Use it right after you step out of the shower when your pores are open for better absorption.
Step 5
Protect your skin from the sun which can cause sagging, wrinkles and damage. Wear wide brim hats, long sleeve shirts, and make sure to cover all exposed areas with sunscreen. Use one with at least a 15 SPF.
Step 6
Build muscle to keep your skin taut. Do exercises that target your whole body like bench presses, shoulder presses, back rows, triceps extensions, biceps curls and lunges. Do 10 to 12 reps, three to four sets, and work out three times a week on alternating days.
