Mycobutin is the only U.S. brand name for the generic rifabutin. It is used in the treatment of advanced stages of human immunodeficiency virus infections and in others who have depleted immune systems. Rifabutin may help to prevent mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) from precipitating disease that is system-wide in those with HIV. MAC may show itself in AIDS patients as bodily weakness, loss of weight, chills, night sweats and fevers.
Rare Serious Side Effects
Mycobutin use may induce some serious side effects that will require at least a consultation with your doctor if you experience any of them. Although these are rare, they should be taken seriously. They include skin yellowing, feces that are tar-like and black, abnormal weakness, bodily bruising, skin spots that are purple or abnormal tiredness. Other rare side effects include taste changes, abnormal bruising, chills, abnormal bleeding, a cough, mouth problems that may include white spots, sores and ulcers, pain in the eyes, shortness of breath, blindness, urination that is difficult or causes pain, pain in your side or lower area of the back, skin paleness and pain or inflammation in your muscles.
Common Serious Side Effects
These serious side effects from taking Mycobutin are more commonly experienced, according to the Mayo Clinic, but also require medical help. They may include a loss of energy or strength, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach sourness, throat soreness, a fever, indigestion or heartburn, itching with or without a rash and appetite decreases or loss.
Temporary Side Effects
These side effects may be bothersome at first but tend to go away as you use more Mycobutin over time. Call your physician if they do not vanish or if you need help to reduce them or prevent them. These include insomnia, pain in the abdomen, a skin rash, an unpleasant, unusual or uncomfortable taste or after-taste, flatulence, belching, headaches, a sensation of being bloated or full, changes in the way food tastes and pain in the chest.
