The Nordic Track EXP1000 is one of the many treadmills by the well-known exercise equipment company. Nordic Track makes treadmills, ellipticals, exercise bikes, steppers, skiers and incline trainers for cardiovascular exercise. Treadmills though are great because walking is one of the most recommended types of exercise for health and weight loss. The American Council on Exercise (ACE) says that walking most days of the week is an effective way to begin an exercise program. More advanced exercisers can use a treadmill, like the easy-to-use Nordic Track EXP 1000, can add some intervals of jogging along with their walking program or just stick with running for a higher amount of calories burned.

Step 1

Plug the treadmill in, preferably into a surge protector. Try a CUL listed surge protector that is rated for 15 amps and has a 14-gauge cord. Flip the power switch on. The switch is located at the back of the treadmill on the side of the deck.

Step 2

Step onto the foot rails and insert the key into the slot in the center of the console. Clip the key to the waistband of your exercise shorts or pants. The clip is supposed to pull the key out of the console to turn off the treadmill if you start to move backwards dangerously toward the end of the deck.

Step 3

Press one of the "weight" buttons on the console. Keep pressing the buttons up or down until the display shows your current weight. Hold the "weight" button to set your weight. Do the same to enter your current age by pressing either of the "age" buttons.

Step 4

Press the "start" button. Step on the walking belt after it starts. Press the up "speed" button to increase the speed one mph at a time. Hold the button to increase the speed by .5 mph.

Step 5

Increase the incline if you wish by pressing the up "incline" button on the console.

Step 6

Walk for 30 minutes at 4 mph to meet the recommended amount of exercise by ACE. Use the speed section on the display above the "select" and the "start program" buttons to check your speed is around 4 mph, or look at the distance section to walk until you hit 2 miles.

Step 7

Decrease the speed back to one mph and lower the incline to zero when you are finished with your workout. Step onto the foot rails, remove the key, switch the treadmill off, and unplug the machine.
