About NuvaRing Side Effects

The NuvaRing is a form of contraception used to prevent pregnancy. It is a flexible ring containing hormones that is placed into the vagina. It provides protection for a period of three weeks at a time.

Common Side Effects

According to the National Library of Medicine, NuvaRing's most common side effects include headaches, vaginitis, weight gain, sinusitis and nausea.

Mild Side Effects

Drugs.com says that the NuvaRing can cause breast pain or tenderness, vomiting, alopecia (hair loss), vaginal itching and dizziness.

Warning

The NuvaRing can lead to serious adverse conditions, including a heart attack, pulmonary embolism (clot in your lungs), high blood pressure, cerebral thrombosis (brain clot) and cerebral hemorrhage (brain bleed). It can also cause high blood pressure and liver tumors, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Considerations

Anybody can get the aforementioned side effects. However, you are at an increased risk for getting those side effects if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, smoking and hypersensitivity to the NuvaRing, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Time Frame

The occurrence of the aforementioned side effects is dependent on the individual and her medical history. For example, they may appear one day after NuvaRing placement or one month after placement.
