Hair pieces can help you feel more comfortable with your thinning hair, or they may be a good way to change up your look. When you wear your hairpiece, it gets dirty just like natural hair does. It's important to keep your hairpiece clean so that it looks more natural, not stringy or clumped together. You can wash a natural or synthetic piece with shampoo in your home in just a few minutes. Just be sure to properly care for you natural or synthetic piece for the best results.
Step 1
Wash your hairpiece at least every 10 to 12 wearings, as recommended by HairLossExpert.co.uk. This will ensure that you hairpiece stays clean and looking natural, whether it's synthetic or real.
Step 2
Brush your hairpiece out with a wide toothed comb to release any obvious dirt and to help separate the strands from any product that may still be in the hairpiece. You can also try shaking it out to get rid of any dust or debris that might be hiding in it.
Step 3
Pour 4 tbsp. of a clarifying shampoo into a small dish of about two cups of warm water. Choose a bowl that is large enough to hold your entire piece. Submerge your hairpiece into the bowl, and swish it around gently for one to two minutes, depending on how dirty the hairpiece is. Rinse the hairpiece under warm water, then gently shake to remove the excess.
Step 4
Dump the water out of the bowl, and refill it with warm water, replacing the shampoo with 2 tbsp. of conditioner. If you're using a natural hairpiece, use any conditioner you wish, but if it is a synthetic piece, use a conditioner specifically for synthetic hair. Regular conditioner will make the synthetic hair too greasy. Leave the hairpiece submerged in the conditioner water for two minutes.
Step 5
Remove the hairpiece, but don't rinse out the conditioner. Comb the piece through one more time with the wide toothed comb, and then spread out on a clean towel to dry. If it is real hair, you can use a blow dry to style it while it dries, but synthetic hair should not be blown dry. Just allow it to drip dry on the towel.
