Acne can leave behind areas of discoloration and scarring, even months after the breakouts have healed. The scarred areas can be drier and tougher in texture than the surrounding skin, making it difficult to remove them easily. To successfully eliminate acne discolorations, it is important to first soften the scarred areas, then exfoliate and tone the skin. This will effectively remove the dead and discolored skin cells, while building new skin cells to create a more balanced skin tone.
Step 1
Massage 1 tbsp. of olive oil onto the skin using deep, circular motions with the fingers. After three minutes, lean 18 inches over a bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel over your head to allow the steam to billow over your face. After five minutes, lift up your head and wipe away the oil with a damp washcloth. Repeat once a week. Olive oil is a non-pore clogging oil that can soften and loosen dead, discolored skin. Olive oil, when combined with steam, works to hydrate the skin cells more than normal. Once hydrated, the dead and scarred skin cells will become loose and soft. Once the scarred skin is loose, you can effectively remove it.
Step 2
Combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda with 1 tsp. of water, then massage the paste onto the skin for one minute. Rinse the skin well with water, and repeat up to three times a week. Baking soda contains smooth, rounded particulates that can be scrubbed onto scarred skin without causing skin damage or irritation. Baking soda is also highly alkaline, and can kill off acne-causing bacteria, making it helpful in preventing new acne breakouts as well.
Step 3
Soak five cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, then place one cotton pad on the chin, one on each cheek and two on the forehead. After five minutes, remove the pads and let the skin air dry. You can do this treatment daily. Applying this vitamin C toner can help support the skin in building new skin cells. This can allow the skin to become more evenly toned faster. Concentrated lemon juice is high in vitamin C.
