Family Home Evening Ideas for Children

Spending evenings at home with the family is a great way to save money, bond with spouse and children, and become closer and more understanding as a family unit. These days, saving money is on the minds of just about everyone, so finding things to do as a family that keep the kids (and everyone else) entertained does not have to be expensive and promotes togetherness. Sit down as a family and decide.

Movie Night

Every week, watch movies together. Either watch movies you already have or rent on at the video store. Every week, a different family member can select a movie, so everyone has a chance to choose, and get to know different types of movies, as well as genres. Parents Magazine online suggests 10 top rated animated movies, which includes "Chicken Run" or "A Bug's Life."

Game Night

Games are always fun for family play and can include old-time favorites like Monopoly, Twister, charades, card games like Go Fish to Bridge, or Wii. If you don't want to play a board or card game with everyone because of different age groups, have the younger kids play an age-appropriate game together in the same room as older children or adults are playing.

Story Time

One night a week, gather around and tell stories; any kind will do. Ghost stories, funny stories or adventure stories are sure to keep everyone entertained. Active imaginations and encouragement will help build confidence and self-esteem, as well as encourage some to be more comfortable with sharing their thoughts with others.

Backyard Camping

Taking the family camping once in a while is a great way to encourage children to explore their world, and teach them to adapt to different environments. For first-timers, camp out in the backyard first. Watch the stars come out, name them and then have your children do the same. Cooking marshmallows over a campfire is a treat they won't likely soon forget.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts---from finger painting to making decorations out of pipe cleaners or foam crafts---are a favorite with kids. Clay and paper and crayons, encourage children to let their creativity show.
