Bags under the eyes are often caused by water retention and swelling. Lying in bed all night while you sleep causes fluid to pool under your eyes, which can increase the look of bags and dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles are usually caused by blood vessels under the skin becoming visible due to thin skin. There are a few things you can do if you wake up with either or both of these problems. Some puffiness will always be there because of genetics, but applying cold compresses, cucumber slices and eye cream can get rid of those ugly circles and unsightly bags.
Step 1
Put something cold on your eyes. Cold reduces swelling and constricts blood vessels to reduce the appearance of bags under the eyes, says dermatologist Dr. Jody A. Levine in an article "The No-Knife Eye Lift" on Good Housekeeping magazine's website. Use a cold compress that has been chilled in your fridge or soak two teabags in cold water. Squeeze out the water and place the tea bags on your closed eyes. Leave the cold item on your eyes for at least 10 minutes as recommended by Dr. James Sameul in his article "Home Remedies to Get Rid of Dark Circle Under Eyes."
Step 2
Apply rosewater to your eyes to reduce dark circles. Use a dropper to put the rosewater on a cotton ball or cotton round. Lie down and place the cotton balls on your eyelids to allow the rosewater to work on your dark circles, advises Dr. Savitha Suri in an article called "Natural Remedies and Home Remedies for Dark Circles Under Eyes."
Step 3
Make a remedy for dark circles from cucumber juice, lemon juice and lanolin cream. Chill the cucumber juice and then add the other ingredients. Place the mixture on your eyes for 20 minutes. Rinse off gently with warm water.
Step 4
Use an eye cream twice a day, every day. Eye cream is even more effective to combat dark circles than a regular face cream, says Heidi Waldorf, M.D. Choose an eye cream with caffeine because it tightens the skin to reduce bags, recommends Dr. Levine. Applying the eye cream gives you a chance to press the bones around the eyes and drain the fluid that had accumulated to cause bags.
Tips and Warnings
- Women who are pregnant or menstruating may experience dark circles because the skin becomes more translucent during these times. Get plenty of rest, protect your eyes from the sun with sunglasses or sunscreen, and take your vitamins during these times, and all the time, to reduce dark circles, advises Dr. Sameul.
