Side Effects of Dextromethorphan HBr

Dextromethorphan HBr is a cough remedy for the flu or a cold. It is an over-the-counter medication that affects the brain's cough center. It is sold in a variety of brand-name medications that include Robitussin, Dexalone, Nycoff, Pediacare, Vicks 44 Cough Relief, Creo-Terpin, Delsym, Benylin Pediatric Formula, Creomulsion, Miltuss, Father John's Medicine and Nycoff, among others.

Common Side Effects

A common side effect of dextromethorphan HBr is headache. Taking too much of the medication can cause unsteadiness when walking, shakiness, blurred vision, dizziness or drowsiness. Contact your doctor about any of these overdose side effects.

Gastrointestinal Side Effects

The use of dextromethorphan HBr may cause gastrointestinal system such as urination difficulties and severe vomiting or nausea. There also may be less severe side effects that include pain in the stomach, constipation, and less severe vomiting and nausea. These may go away on their own once your body acclimates to the drug.

Mental Side Effects

An overdose of dextromethorphan HBr may cause some mental difficulties, too. These also may require medical attention, so check with your physician if you get them. They include mental confusion, severe irritability, abnormal restlessness, unusual nervousness or uncommon excitement.

Respiratory Side Effects

You may experience a slowing down of your breathing if you take an overdose of dextromethorphan HBr. This also is a serious side effect, so check with a medical professional if you experience it.

Cardiovascular Side Effects

According to RxList.com, there may be some side effects in your cardiovascular system from using dextromethorphan HBr. These may include heart palpitations, heart arrhythmias (irregularities of your heartbeat), low blood pressure (hypotension) and high blood pressure (hypertension).
