Luveris is the brand name of lutropin alfa, a drug used to help overcome infertility in women. It acts like LH, or luteinizing hormone, a pituitary gland secretion (hormone) that the placenta produces during pregnancy. When a woman is unable to conceive a child, she may be given Luveris along with follitropin alfa to help overcome the problem. Luveris is administered intravenously and can be injected at home. The normal course, according to the Mayo Clinic, is 75 IUs (international units) each day for two weeks.
Common Side Effects
Luveris may produce some side effects that are relatively common. They are not generally considered serious and should go away as you continue administering the medicine. Your physician may have some suggestions to help reduce these types of side effects. The most common side effects may include unusual bodily weakness, pain in the breast, abnormal tiredness, a sensation of feeling bloated or full, flatulence, pain and headaches. Less common side effects include throat soreness, sneezing, aches throughout the body, a runny nose, chills, an ovarian disorder, a cough, congestion, cramps, voice loss, breathing difficulties, bleeding that is heavy, constipation, a fever or congestion of the ears.
Very Serious Side Effects
There are a few serious side effects that require you to immediately cease injection of Luveris and seek emergency medical aid. These include severe pain in the abdomen, rapid weight gain, vomiting and nausea.
Other Serious Side Effects
Consult your physician as soon as you can if you experience any of these serious side effects from Luveris. They include diarrhea, warmth at the injection site, pelvic aches or heaviness, tingling, discomfort in the stomach, scarring or redness on the skin, bloating, blisters on the skin, a feeling of coldness, skin discoloration, inflammation or infection, lumps on your body, itching, or swelling or stinging sensations. Other serious side effects have been reported, according to the Mayo Clinic, during pregnancy, such as spontaneous abortion, premature labor, a postpartum fever, an ectopic pregnancy in which the fetus begins to develop, but not in the womb, and congenital abnormalities. Some other effects have been reported during menotropin therapy, which is the procedure of trying to conceive with the help of outside methods. These include breathing difficulties, leg or arm swelling, redness or pain, adnexal torsion (a twisting of the ovaries), skin color changes, enlargement of the ovaries, and feet and hand coldness.
Overdose Side Effects
Luveris also can induce side effects if you take too much of it. An overdose requires emergency medical treatment. Overdose side effects include vomiting, severe nausea, pain in the abdomen, rapid weight gain, bloating and multiple gestation.
