Side Effects of Clonazepam

Clonazepam (brand name Klonopin) is a prescription medication that is used to treat certain types of seizures and anxiety. It is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines, which are medications that slow down the nervous system. Your doctor may supervise this medication closely and order blood tests to see that the medication is working properly and not causing any unwanted effects. This may not be a comprehensive list of side effects, so be sure to consult with your doctor and pharmacist if you are on clonazepam.

Common Side Effects

The most common side effects (in order from more to less common) are drowsiness, coordination problems and behavioral issues, according to EMedTV. Because this medication can cause difficulty controlling movement and drowsiness, the Mayo Clinic recommends you to be cautious if you must drive or operate heavy machinery while taking this drug. Many common side effects may not require a doctor's visit. These can include body aches or pain, cough, ear congestion, headache or lack of appetite. Any side effect that seems extreme or does not go away should be reported to your doctor.

Side Effects that Mimic Depression

Some side effects of clonazepam can mimic symptoms of depression including: sadness, irritability, feeling discouraged, loss of interest or pleasure, difficulty concentrating, issues with fatigue or difficulty with sleeping, according to The National Library of Medicine. If you have the symptoms contact a medical professional to help you if you can attribute these to clonazepam or depression. EMedTV notes that clonazepam can worsen depression as well.

Serious Side Effects

Some side effects can be serious and the National Library of Medicine recommends contacting your doctor immediately if you have any of them. These include facial swelling (eyes, lips, tongue and/or throat), hoarseness, difficulty breathing or rash or hives. Other serious side effects include memory problems, hostility, hallucinations, problems with balance, allergic reaction or insomnia, according to EMedTV.

Warnings

Mayo Clinic warns that this medication can cause suicidal thoughts or behaviors. If you have this side effect, contact your doctor or emergency services immediately. This medication can also cause certain people to display abnormal behaviors such as agitation or irritability. Do not stop taking this medication without your doctor's guidance to lessen the possibility of your condition worsening or having withdrawal symptoms.
