According to the Mayo Clinic, tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected from bacteria or a virus. The result is pain, inflammation and sometimes fever or other signs of illness. Tonsillitis is most often caused by a virus and is treated at home with sore throat remedies. Bacterial infections require antibiotic treatment. The visual symptoms of tonsillitis resemble the common cold, but in viral infections, the tonsils may take on an unusual appearance.
Inflammation
The inflammation associated with tonsillitis can cause redness of the tonsils and the surrounding throat area. This can cause a sore throat that makes swallowing difficult and painful.
Swelling
The tonsils can become swollen from fluid, infection and irritation. This can make it more difficult to swallow. According to the Mayo Clinic, untreated swollen tonsils can lead to trouble sleeping or even the obstruction of the airways.
Lesions
White patches may develop on the tonsils as the result of infection. The patches can be small or they can cover the tonsils, throat and roof of the mouth.
Drainage
The Children's Hospital Organization points out that visual drainage of the throat is often a sign of tonsillitis or throat infection. Because these symptoms can mimic other conditions, consult a physician for diagnosis.
