5 Things You Need to Know About Keratin

1. A Fancy Name for Hair, Skin and Nails

Human hair, skin, nails and mammal claws and hooves are made of Alpha-keratin. It's formed by living cells called keratinocytes, and these cells form our outside protective coverings-skin, nails and hair. The outermost layer of keratin (skin) on the human body are actually comprised of dead keratin cells that are pushed to the surface as the body forms new keratin.

2. Weak Keratin Leads to Hair Loss

When the hair shaft lose too much keratin, hair loss occurs. When an excessive amount of hair falls out in a short period of time, especially on a young person, the condition can be diagnosed as alopecia. In extreme cases like this, keratin replenishment alone won't help hair grow back. Products like Rogaine and Minoxidil are needed to restore thinning hair by replacing the keratin with protein with products containing keratin, made by companies like Chi and Jason Naturals. These products often contain biotin as well to nourish damaged hair. Some shampoos, conditioners, oils and leave-in masks are made with keratin and other proteins to revitalize damaged hair shafts.

3. Renew Hair With Protein Based Treatments

When keratin in the hair fades, it depletes the hair of necessary amino acids and proteins that give it a healthy sheen. Through daily wear and tear, use of styling products, poor nutrition and other factors the keratin that comprises hair becomes weak, making hair brittle and frizzy. If the hair has a good overlay of keratin, it will look and feel vibrant and healthy.

4. Keeps Nails Strong

Toenails and fingernails are also comprised of keratin. When the protein weakens from poor nutrition or excess external damage, you can use brush-on protein nail strengthener. Use nail polish remover and dark (red, black, purple) nail polish sparingly to keep the keratin in nails healthy. Moisturize cuticles with special creams by Burt's Bees and Kiehls and other natural cosmetic firms.

5. Maintain Balance for Younger Looking Skin

Maintaining a good keratin balance in surface skin takes on added importance as we age. To keep skin supple and clear, you can take a keratin supplement in capsule form that contains both keratin and collagen (yes, it's the stuff they put in your lips.) A keratin overgrowth causes skin conditions like rashes, acne or plugged hair follicles. If you have any of these conditions, check with your dermatologist for the best treatment.
