How to Prevent Razor Bumps on the Bikini Area

According to MotherNature.com, razor burn or razor bumps are caused by shaving without proper lubrication, a dull razor blade or shaving too quickly. Existing razor bumps require no treatment but they will heal more quickly by avoiding shaving or applying hydrocortisone cream to reduce the irritation. The bikini skin area is a delicate area that requires more careful shaving than the face or the legs.

Step 1

Prepare to shave the bikini area by soaking in the bath for 15 to 20 minutes. When this is not possible, wet a cloth with warm water and press it on the skin for a few minutes.

Step 2

Apply a generous amount of shave gel, lotion or cream to the area. It is best to select sensitive skin formulas without additives and fragrance for the bikini area. The milder the products, the less likely the skin will become irritated.

Step 3

Use a new razor blade and begin shaving in the direction of hair growth. The sharper the razor, the fewer the strokes you will need over each area to remove the hair.

Step 4

Rinse the shaving product completely off the skin. Leaving any behind can irritate your skin.

Step 5

Apply a mild after-shave lotion to the skin. Just like the shave cream, the lotion should be mild and without additives or fragrance. Natural ingredients like aloe vera may be the most soothing.

Things You'll Need

  • Sharp razor
  • Shave cream, gel or lotion
  • After-shave lotion
