Atrophic scars are types of scars that not only leave a mark on the skin, but also cause an indentation on the surface of the skin. Atrophic scars can appear anywhere on the body and are a result of improper wound healing. Atrophic scars are most often associated with skin conditions or severe acne breakouts. Due to the nature of an atrophic scar, you need to meet with a doctor to discuss your options to remove the blemish.
Step 1
Meet with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon to discuss your options. The doctor is likely to examine the scars and determine how extensive the damage is to the area. He will go over the benefits and risks of multiple procedures used to get rid of the scars.
Step 2
Hide the atrophic scars with injectable fillers. An injectable filler can be used to mask the atrophic scars. However, the results typically only last for up to 6 months, and repeated doses are needed to maintain results. Collagen is an example of an injectable filler used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons.
Step 3
Undergo the recommended procedure to remove atrophic scars. There are several methods used by doctors for atrophic scar removal. Three examples include subcision, laser resurfacing and grafting. During subscision, a needle is placed under the skin and used to release scar tissue causing the atrophic scarring. Laser resurfacing uses highly concentrated light to remove the top layers of the skin. This can help stimulate regrowth of the skin. However, doctors will most often combine laser resurfacing treatments with the subcision procedure. For grafting, the atrophic scar will be cut away from the skin. A skin graft is then placed over the area to replace the lost skin. The skin is usually taken from behind the ear.
Step 4
Adhere to any aftercare directions your doctor may give you, and attend all follow up appointments.
