5 Things You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation Recovery

1. Don't Squeeze, Please

Following breast augmentation, whether it involves a breast life or implants, it is important not to touch or jostle the breasts too much. This will help the healing process. Patients should lay on their backs, and keep the breasts bound with a supportive bra. Some patients are given a special surgical bra to wear home after surgery and through the recovery period.

2. Take it Easy

It is important to take it easy in the days following a breast augmentation. While breast augmentation recovery varies from patient to patient, the average recovery time is in between a few days to a one or two weeks. It depends on the overall health of the patient. While recovering, you may be given some pain medication, for at least the first two days following surgery. After that it is best to relax and let your body heal. Avoid sports and other activities (like in the bedroom) that will cause your breasts to move or incisions to tear.

3. Watch for Infection

Complications are not common with most breast augmentation surgeries. However, if you have a fever above 101 you should all your doctor. You should also call if you have any redness, swelling or tenderness around your surgery scars. Some infections clear up on their own, while others require antibiotics. In rare cases breast implants will need to be removed until an infection has cleared up.

4. Call Your Plastic Surgeon

Sometimes signs of plastic surgery complications include shortness of breath, chest pains or unusual heart beats. If you experience any of these, you should call your plastic surgeon or regular physician right away. They may be nothing or they may require hospitalization and/or follow up treatment.

5. Scars Will Fade Over Time

Breast augmentation will leave some scarring. At first they will be firm and pink, for at least six weeks. For the next several months scars may look like the same or slightly wider. However, after several months the breast augmentation scars will fade. Keep in mind they won't disappear entirely. Be sure to ask your plastic surgeon about the final size, shape and placement of your scars following breast augmentation surgery.
