1. So Many Choices, So Little Time
There are many different kinds of cycling helmets on the market today. Think about the type of riding you plan on doing. Leisure bike riding in the city requires a helmet that complies with city or state helmet laws. Mountain biking requires a helmet that can withstand larger drops and riding in wet weather. Bike racing requires a more aerodynamic helmet. Always check for the safety sticker on the helmet. This sticker tells you the use the helmet was intended for. If there is no sticker, do not buy the helmet, no matter what the price.
2. How Much Should it Cost?
A good quality helmet costs $20 to $300. Cheaper helmets found in large discount stores are suitable for infrequent, leisure riding only. You need a greater degree of protection for any riding on the road or in the country. It's better to pay more for a helmet and get an effective, secure model than to save a few dollars and risk brain injury in the event of an accident.
3. My Style
The styles for bike riding helmets change over the years. The current style of an oval with venting and a pointed tail is popular with bike racers and kids alike. Helmets come in multiple colors, allowing you to express your individuality while riding. Most riders select a helmet in the same color scheme as the bike. Members of bicycle racing teams select helmets that have the team colors on them.
4. Proper Fit
To find the right fit, measure your head. Take a tape measure and wrap it around your head, at the point just above your ears. Check in a mirror to make sure the back is flat against your head and in a straight line. When trying on a helmet, select one in your size. Place it firmly on your head and secure the chin straps. Grasp the helmet firmly each your hands on each side of your head and move it up and down. The helmet should move no more than a half inch up and down. Move the helmet left to right. There should be no movement. Children outgrow helmets quickly. Recheck the fit every 6 months to make sure the helmet is still providing the right level of protection.
