1. A Difficult Decision

Dating after a divorce can be a difficult decision. Some moral questions revolve around whether it is too soon to date after a divorce. Often a divorce can be an emotionally and psychologically draining process, and It can take some time to recover. Don't feel compelled to start dating simply because your friends are pressuring you, or because you "need" to date simply to get over your ex-spouse. Use your personal belief systems and not societal standards of what to do after a long and painful divorce. When you add children into the equation, the decision to date can be even more difficult. Assess what you want out of your next relationship, and make a list of things you need out of a relationship to use as a starting point.

2. Getting Your Feet Wet

Depending upon how long you were married, re-entering the dating world can be a scary process. Casual dating practices may have changed and make you feel you are out of practice. However, this inexperience shouldn't deter you from testing the water. One of the best ways to meet potential dating partners is to ask friends if they know anyone you might get along with. Try church functions, singles nights, and even book clubs or lectures as places to meet potential dates. Remember to have fun with the process and not put too much stock in your dates. The experience should be fun, and you most likely won't meet your next Prince (or princess) Charming on your first time out of the gate.

3. Dating After Divorce Issues

Dating following a divorce can seem a bit strange; in fact sometimes it can be more difficult than a marriage itself. The courting relationship is often filled with just as many ups and downs as a marriage. For recent divorcees, it can be an even more taxing process. Learning how to lighten up and be with other people again should be the main goal of a post-divorce dating relationship.

One of the most difficult aspects of dating after a separation is dealing with children. Children are often very affected by divorce and the prospect of one or both parents dating can cause feelings of anger, resentment, and even fear of being replaced. Talk to your children about any fears, and assure them that no one will replace their mother or father. Knowing what you need in a partner helps you to stay focused on your expectations for your next relationship. Perhaps you want to just have fun, or maybe you're looking for a more serious commitment from your next partner. Whatever the case, it's best to simply live one moment at a time and relax through the process. Be open to new experiences and be honest with yourself.
