3 Ways to Use Shiatsu for Heartburn

1. Correct the Flow of Chi

Shiatsu is a form of massage that has been found to relieve heartburn. Unlike traditional forms of massage, no oils are used, and the person is fully clothed during the massage. Shiatsu uses some of the same principles as acupuncture in the sense that it is designed to correct the flow of chi in the body. Shiatsu also helps to bring the elements of yin and yang into balance to improve overall health. It works on the same principal as acupuncture in that it corrects the flow of chi throughout the body, bringing both the yin and yang elements back into balance, thereby improving the health of the person receiving the massage. There are a couple of ways that shiatsu helps relieve heartburn. First, it reduces stress and promotes relaxation, which can often be factors that cause heartburn. Additionally, there are various points on the body that can be stimulated to improve the flow of chi and help with digestion. One this flow of energy improves, heartburn will disappear.

2. Find a Shiatsu Practitioner

You can find a shiatsu practitioner in your area by going to the Massage Therapy website and doing a search based on your zip code. Call the practitioner and find out if they have had success treating heartburn. Some schools for shiatsu also have days when supervised students give shiatsu massages at a reduced rate.

3. Be Your Own Shiatsu Practitioner

There are shiatsu techniques that you can perform on yourself that can help prevent heartburn. You might want to purchase a book or DVD to help you, but it isn't absolutely necessary. There is a point at the top of your foot where the bones of your second and third toe meet. If you apply pressure here you will reduce the level of acid in your stomach, which will reduce heartburn. Another point to apply light pressure to is the spot in the middle of the joint on the front of your ankle. Then, you down into the web of your foot in the front and massage the area between your second and third toe. Press the spot located in the center of your breastbone to reduce anxiety and stimulate the flow of energy to the stomach. The points on the inside of your feet where your arch and the ball of your feet meet is also a good place to massage to relieve indigestion.
