How to Reduce Lip Lines

Wrinkles are one of the most common signs of aging. One of the most likely places to start developing wrinkles first is around the lips. These lip wrinkles, also commonly referred to as lip lines, are usually associated with the effects of aging, more specifically the loss of collagen and elastin beneath the skin's surface, and the natural loss of moisture in the skin tissue. Luckily, there are many treatment options available today to help remove--or at least lessen--the prominence of these lip lines.

Step 1

Buy an anti-aging cream. The most common--and most accessible--option for treating lip lines are prescription or non-prescription wrinkle solutions. These can come in either cream or lotion form, and often include ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids, coenzyme Q-10 and vitamin A (retinoids). The difference between prescription strength and over-the-counter anti-aging products is the amount of vitamin A present in the solution. Vitamin A can be potentially harmful if an overdose occurs, requiring those products with high levels of the vitamin to be regulated by medical professionals.

Step 2

Try a glycolic peel. Glycolic peels use specialized acids to aid skin professionals in removing the outermost layer of your skin. This helps remove any dead, dull skin cells, and allows younger and healthier skin cells beneath to have access to the surface. This can lessen the prominence of lip lines.

Step 3

Have a dermabrasion treatment. Dermabrasion is used to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells from the surface of your face. According to the Mayo Clinic, the new skin cell growth after dermabrasion is usually much smoother than the removed skin layer. This can help lessen the signs of wrinkles around the lips.

Step 4

Talk to your doctor about Botox. Botox is toxin (botulinum) that can be injected into the muscles directly beneath the skin around the lips. As a neurotoxin, Botox paralyzes the muscle beneath, which can help smooth out wrinkle lines on the surface of the skin.

Step 5

Try a dermafiller. Dermafillers, such as collagen and restylane, are injected like Botox, but instead of working on the muscle, they work directly to plump the skin. By filling in the space below the lip line, dermafillers can pull the skin tight, getting rid of the wrinkles in the process.
