How to Make Face Scrubs

When you make your own face scrubs, you can get the same effects you'd get from purchased scrubs without the addition of any ingredients that you don't want, according to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Making face scrubs at home is an easy process, and the results of your labor make great additions to your own bathroom as well as charming gifts for friends and family.

Step 1

Combine brown sugar and oatmeal in a small bowl, using your hands.

Step 2

Add the brown sugar-oatmeal mixture to the olive oil, mixing thoroughly until the olive oil has been thoroughly incorporated into the solid ingredients.

Step 3

Transfer the scrub mixture to a sturdy container with a lid.

Step 4

Squeeze three or four drops of essential oil on top of the mixture in the container, and stir the mixture a few times.

Step 5

Rub the scrub mixture generously over your face--avoiding the eye area--making circles with your fingertips as you apply the mixture.

Step 6

Rinse the scrub thoroughly with cool water.

Step 7

Store unused mixture in a closed container for up to two weeks.

Tips and Warnings

  • Different essential oils give your scrubs different effects. Try grapefruit, lemongrass or eucalyptus oil to give your scrub an energizing effect. Use lavender, geranium or ylang-ylang oils for a soothing face scrub. If you make several versions of your scrub with different essential oils, consider adding a few drops of food coloring to help you easily tell one mixture from the other.
  • If you notice any breakouts or signs or irritation in your skin, discontinue use of your homemade scrub. Consider making a batch without essential oils to see if the oil you've chosen is causing the reaction, and see your doctor if you notice any signs of allergic reaction, such as swelling, redness or shortness of breath.
