Signs of Mold Allergy

Mold is a fungus that exists everywhere. It grows outside and can be found in damp places in your home such as the bathroom, kitchen and basement. If you are allergic you may develop symptoms when you inhale mold spores. Severe allergies to mold require treatment to avoid complications such as permanent damage to your airways. If you notice the signs and symptoms, see your doctor to discuss a treatment plan.

Common Allergy Symptoms

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America mold allergy symptoms often mimic the symptoms of other allergies. Symptoms can include sneezing, runny nose, congestion and skin that is dry and scaling. The symptoms may occur immediately after exposure or they may take some time to develop. With mold allergies your symptoms will often be worse when you are in a damp and moldy environment.

Other Symptoms

In some cases you may develop symptoms similar to hay fever. The Mayo Clinic states that you may have a runny nose, cough, post nasal drip and watery eyes. In addition your eyes, nose and throat may become itchy. If you are allergic to outdoor molds you may just have symptoms during certain times of the year. If you are allergic to indoor molds you may have symptoms year round.

Severe Symptoms

Mold allergy can lead to sinusitis, or inflammation of your sinuses. If your lungs become inflamed you may develop chronic conditions such as asthma. The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology claims that in some patients mold exposure may lead to severe asthma attacks and cause wheezing, trouble breathing and chronic cough. In addition, you are also at risk for developing allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, which is a serious allergic reaction. This condition causes the above symptoms along with coughing that produces blood and fever. It can lead to lung damage.
