Making your own baby food from organic ingredients is easy and smart, since organic food limits your baby's exposure to pesticides and other potential contaminants, like hormones and antibiotics. Commercially available organic baby food can be pricey, but making your own is much more affordable and fairly easy to do. If you've resolved to make your family's health a priority, start by making an easy change that your littlest members will appreciate and make your own organic baby food.
Fruits and Vegetables
Step 1
Choose organic vegetables and fruits at the market. Good choices for baby food include sweet potatoes, carrots, bananas, winter squash, green beans and wax beans.
Step 2
Chop vegetables roughly, then steam until tender. Steam each kind of vegetable separately.
Step 3
Use a food mill, blender, potato masher or fork to puree the vegetable or fruit until it is smooth. Add a little water or breast milk if you need to thin the puree to get the right consistency.
Step 4
Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, or freeze in individual portion sizes.
Meats
Step 1
Choose organic meat. Remove all bones, gristle and fat from the meat before cooking.
Step 2
Bake, braise or roast the meat until it is completely cooked. Be sure the meat is well done.
Step 3
Cut meat into small pieces, then puree, using a food mill or blender. Add a little water or breast milk if you need to thin the puree to get the right consistency.
Step 4
Store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, or freeze in individual portion sizes.
Tips and Warnings
- Check your local farmers market for organic groceries; it may be more affordable than organic produce or meat at the supermarket. Use ice cube trays to freeze extra baby food. Each hole of the container is a perfect portion size.
- Never leave baby food in the refrigerator for more than 24 hours, and don't thaw baby food by leaving it on the counter. Thaw it in the refrigerator or reheat it instead. Never refreeze baby food that you've thawed.
