Hair pins allow you to style your hair in a variety of ways. From easy, utilitarian hairstyles to elaborate up-dos, having a good assortment of different hair pins in your beauty arsenal will give you the most versatility when it comes to styling your hair. While some types of hair pins are used more frequently than others, you can master the use of one- and two-pronged hair pins fairly easily, and once you have, you'll be able to switch up your style with ease.
Stick Pins
Step 1
Pull your hair back into a ponytail, holding it low at the nap or your neck. Coil the hair into a bun shape by twisting the hair until it begins to coil in on itself. Tuck the hair up into the coil so that it is all piled loosely in one area.
Step 2
Push the non-decorative end of a stick pin into one side of the coil. Work the pin down toward the head, and thread it into the hair at the back of the head to secure the coil to your head.
Step 3
Poke the pointy end of the stick pin out the other side of the coil, and set with hairspray to hold.
Two-Pronged Pins
Step 1
Gather the hair into a ponytail about halfway between the crown of your head and the nape of your neck.
Step 2
Roll the ponytail up, inverting it so the bottom points to the crown of your head, and pull hair from one side of the ponytail around the roll to cover it and hold it in place.
Step 3
Push the two-pronged pin into the loose side of the roll. Add another for extra stability. Allow some of the hair to stick freely out of the top for a modern French twist, or tuck it in with another pin for a more polished style.
Bobby Pins
Step 1
Part your hair carefully on the top into four or five sections. Twist each section into a roll, and secure at the crown by pushing a bobby pin into the roll.
Step 2
Coil small, 1-inch sections of the hair all over the back of your head to create an elaborate up-do. Each time you make a coil, push a bobby pin into the end to secure it.
Step 3
Cross two bobby pins for each coil if your hair is especially thick. Crossing two pins will secure the pins tightly, so it's less likely that your up-do will fall out.
Step 4
Use a generous amount of hairspray to keep the hairstyle intact.
