Side Effects of Imitrex Nasal Spray

Sumatriptan, better known as Imitrex, is used to treat acute migraines and cluster headaches once they occur. It cannot prevent migraines and is not meant to be used for any other type of headache. Imitrex helps to return the arteries in the brain back to normal without altering blood flow to the brain. When taken at the onset of a migraine, it reduces the duration of the attack.

Burning Sensations

Burning sensation in the nose and throat may occur. The mouth and tongue may also be affected, and an unusual taste may result. Mild to moderate sore throat may occur when the nasal spray is used. Any irritation should be reported to the doctor as soon as it occurs.

Numbness and Tingling

Numbness and tingling in various parts of the body are possible side effects. Because of Imitrex's affect on the arteries in the brain, these side effects should be monitored closely. Numbness and tingling that doesn't go away after a short period of time can indicate other medical problems.

Dizziness and Other Sensations

Dizziness, muscle weakness, neck pain and stiffness are all possible side effects of Imitrex nasal spray. Feelings of heaviness and pressure in the chest or other parts of the body should be reported to your doctor immediately. These could be indicators of an allergic reaction or an adverse reaction involving the heart.
