3 Ways to Use a Camping Heater

1. Propane Heater

Use your propane heater inside your tent when it is designed for that purpose. Read your propane heater owner's manual to find this out. Coleman has a propane heater for use inside your tent. Make sure that this heater is light enough to take on your camping trip. Most propane heaters are not designed for this purpose. They have an open flame and are dangerous inside your tent. Leave clearance around and above your propane camping heater. Your owner's manual usually recommends distances that are approximately six to twelve inches on the sides of the propane camping heater, one to four feet above the heater and at least three feet in the front of the camping heater. Use your propane camping heater for heating purposes only. Make sure your propane heater is vented properly if you are inside your tent.

2. Electric Heater

Use an electric heater or battery-operated heater inside your tent. These heaters are heavier than propane heaters. If you have electricity at your campsite, you are able to use these electric heaters. The battery-powered heaters work anywhere, but they are heavy and not ideal for backpack camping. The battery-powered heaters are the safest in your tent. They do not have an open flame that could cause a fire. Open-faced electric heaters have an automatic switch to turn the unit off if it gets tipped over. This prevents the coils from burning and causing a fire. Some units are larger and come with a small cart to wheel them around on.

3. Other Uses

Use your portable heater in other places that you need warmth, because these types of heaters are so portable. Use a propane heater when ice fishing out oors on the ice or use a electric or battery-operated heater inside your ice house. A battery-operated heater or electric heater are good for inside a camper or in your house in an emergency. There are sealed oil heaters that are available for use inside your house. These have complete sealed compartments and heat the oil just as a normal oil-burning heater. They are powerful enough to use and run on electricity. Portable heaters work best for camping heaters if they are lightweight and small enough to carry.
