5 Ways to Eat to Improve Fertility

5 Ways to Eat to Improve Fertility

1. Get Vitamin C

Vitamin C in a man's diet can have a direct impact on sperm count. Taking 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C a day for only one week can increase sperm count by at least 100 percent. Foods that are rich in vitamin C include papaya, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, strawberries, oranges, cantaloupe, kiwi and cauliflower. Drinking naturally squeezed orange juice daily can get you enough vitamin C. You can also find vitamin C supplements in pill form.

2. Take Vitamin E

Vitamin E is very important for increasing fertility. Vitamin E improves the ability of the sperm to swim strongly. The swimming of sperm is essential to get it in the vagina, through the cervix and into the uterus. The two best foods for Vitamin E are sunflower seeds and almonds. Also eat olives, papaya, spinach, collard greens and blueberries. Get small doses of vitamin E by sitting in the sun.

3. Avoid Seafood

Increase the chances of getting pregnant by avoiding seafood. Seafood contains high levels of mercury. Studies have shown that men and women with fertility problems often have mercury in their bodies, and often eat a lot of seafood. Avoid lobster, crab, shrimp and fish and replace with lean meats like chicken and turkey.

4. Cut Calories

Overall health may have a direct impact on fertility in a couple. Obesity and being overweight in general can halt ovulation in a female. To have the best chances of conceiving, cut calorie intake to lose weight. Calorie requirements vary from person to person, but try to have no more than 2,000 calories per day. Cutting 5% of body fat can greatly increase ovulation. Cut calories by limiting sugar, red meat and fried foods in your diet. Instead eat more fruits and vegetables, which work double time by giving you powerful antioxidants, which are important for fertility.

5. Folic Acid: Not Just for Kids

Improve sperm with increased amounts of folic acid and zinc. Improve the strength of the sperm and the ability to swim through, in addition to the quality and quantity. Get more folic acid in a diet by eating lentils, collard greens, chickpeas, papaya, asparagus or broccoli. Get more zinc in a diet by eating beef liver or tenderloin, venison, sesame seeds, yogurt or shrimp. Get zinc and folic acid by taking a children's multivitamin such as Flintstones too.
