How to Cover an Acne Scar

If you have a rash of acne, there's a good chance that your acne could leave unsightly scarring. This scarring is most evident on the face, where pockmarks and other scarring can be difficult to hide. But covering up your acne scars is possible with the right kind of makeup, and you can use types of makeup that won't encourage the growth of new acne.

Step 1

Wash your face and pat it dry with a soft cloth. Allow time to air dry before applying makeup.

Step 2

Apply a thin layer of moisturizing lotion to your skin.

Step 3

Apply a thin layer of foundation primer onto your skin. Make sure you have already applied lotion to the places you apply primer. The primer is useful for holding your makeup onto your face and smoothing over divots, pockmarks and other scars. Give the layer of primer 15 to 20 minutes to set, then apply another thin layer.

Step 4

Apply a concealer--one shade darker than your own skin--onto the acne scar. Darker concealers will make the dark blemishes caused by acne scars blend in to the rest of your skin. Dab the concealer onto your skin and smooth it out by dabbing with a wet sponge.

Step 5

Gently apply a translucent powder over your concealer. This will give your makeup a natural sheen and better conceal the scars underneath. Allow a few minutes for the powder to set.

Step 6

Finish with a thin layer of foundation.
