Cellulite makes skin appear dimpled or lumpy, and is the result of fat cells that accumulate under the superficial skin layers. Water then accumulates in these areas, making the connective skin tissues stiff, giving the appearance of cellulite, according to the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM). Cellulite can be improved through increasing circulation and blood flow in the body, and keeping the body well hydrated. Several spa treatments may help improve the appearance of cellulite by improving circulation, toning skin and remove toxins from the body.
Lypossage
Rhythmic massage to increase lymphatic flow and circulation is called lypossage, a type of massage used to combat cellulite. It reduces water retention and can be used on specific areas to target cellulite, according to PCOM. Lypossage done on the lymph nodes under the arms can increase circulation for the whole body, helping cellulite all over the body.
Body Wraps
Body wrapping is a treatment used by spas to help with cellulite by toning, hydrating and improving the elasticity of the skin. According to PCOM, body wraps help cleanse the membranes and skin tissue under the upper layer of skin where cellulite is. Body wraps also promote the absorption of herbs that help with circulation and removal of toxins from the body.
Dermasculpture
Dermasculpture is a full body massage without the use of lotions or oils in which the therapist uses only her knuckles, thumbs and palms to knead muscles. PCOM states that this type of treatment is used in addition to weight-loss programs to help the patient become in tune with his body, leading to healthier habits and improving cellulite.
Entermologie
Entermologie is a cellulite treatment performed in spas in which a device consisting of vacuums and rollers is used to manipulate the skin, smoothing cellulite, according to an article in the "Reporter," the Vanderbilt Medical Center's newspaper. The article says the theory behind the use of entermologie is that it breaks up fat that is eventually excreted through the body and also leads to the formation of new blood vessels which then smooths out the skin and reduces the appearance of cellulite.
Thermage
Thermage is a noninvasive skin tightening treatment that improves body contours, smooths wrinkles and firms skin, according to the University of Alabama at Birmingham. This treatment improves the appearance of cellulite by emitting radio waves that travel deeply into skin to stimulating collagen and tightening the skin. Thermage is performed in a medical spa or dermatologist's office and does not require an anesthetic.
