Although hair loss is not a major health problem, it can play a big role in your self esteem. Fortunately, there are several forms of restoration treatments that can combat hair loss.
Step 1
Stimulate circulation to your scalp with minoxidil. Apply this over-the-counter formula to your head daily to promote hair growth and slow down hair loss. Rogaine is a brand name that contains minoxidil; it comes in male and female versions.
Step 2
Take an oral medication once a day to treat baldness on the top of your head. Talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for Propecia (finasteride).
Step 3
Follow a diet that is high in vitamin A, B, C and E to stimulate circulation to your scalp and promote hair growth. Include foods like chicken breasts, bananas, oatmeal, roast beef, red peppers, citrus fruits, carrots, almonds and safflower oil. Increase your protein and iron intake from foods like liver, oysters, eggs and tuna.
Step 4
Massage your head to stimulate circulation, strengthen your roots and condition your scalp. Use coconut, almond, rosemary or lavender oil. Warm the oil, dip your fingers in it and work from the front of your head to the back. Make circular motions with your fingers and apply moderate pressure. Leave the oil in your hair for 30 minutes before washing it out.
Step 5
Wash your hair with an herbal shampoo to help boost your hair growth, condition your scalp and thicken your hair.
Step 6
Get at least seven hours of sleep a night to boost your immune system and fight fatigue, both of which can promote hair loss.
Tips and Warnings
- Hair weaves and toupees are two types of hair replacement that you can get at a hair restoration center. Hair transplants and scalp reductions are two types of surgical procedures you can look into for restoration. With a hair transplant, a surgeon will uproot groupings of donor hair and implant them into the bald areas on your head. With a scalp reduction, a surgeon removes areas of bald scalp and pulls up hair-bearing scalp from the sides. You can also get these procedures done in conjunction.
- Minoxidil and Propecia can take anywhere from three to six months to start working. Both products will stop working the minute you discontinue use. Propecia is for use by men only. Open or crushed pills should not be handled by women who are pregnant.
