How to Keep Hair From Thinning

When the hair starts to thin, it is usually the first sign you may be going bald. By preventing thinning hair, you can save a lot of time and money on more expensive hair replacement treatments down the line. If your notice your hair is thinning out, speak to your doctor. Certain medical conditions, like thyroid disease, can cause hair loss. Medication to control the disease may prevent any further thinning of the hair.

Step 1

Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids. This nutrient can help prevent hair loss. You can take a supplement or get omega-3 fatty acids from food sources, like salmon, sardines and herring.

Step 2

Eat a high-protein diet. Healthy sources of protein can keep your hair strong and intact. Look for lean proteins to add to your diet, like beans, turkey, chicken, egg whites and fish.

Step 3

Correct a zinc deficiency. Zinc deficiencies can lead to thinning hair. Some foods high in zinc include fish, lobster, crab, mussels, shrimp, nuts and oysters. Avoid zinc supplements, because too much zinc can contribute to hair loss.

Step 4

Keep your stress levels under control. Thinning hair can be caused by bouts of anxiety, depression and stress. To prevent hair loss from these causes, take time to relieve stress through relaxation techniques, like meditation and yoga.

Step 5

Use a hair regrowth product. At the first signs of thinning, prevent any further hair loss by using a minoxidil-based topical treatment. You place the solution onto your scalp to stimulate hair growth. A product that uses minoxidil is Rogaine.
