Statins are used to help lower cholesterol levels in patients whose levels are dangerously elevated. In some cases, these drugs are used long term to help maintain healthy levels. When choosing the best statin for you, a variety of factors need to be taken into consideration, such as the percentage you need to lower your cholesterol and how much you can afford to pay for your medication provided you have no insurance. And while the efficacy has been rated, these ratings vary slightly.
Fluvastatin
Fluvastatin, also known as Lescol, ranks the highest in efficacy with John Hopkins Medicine. According to Prolipid.com, this particular statin performed the best at the 40 mg dose, reducing LDL cholesterol by 27 percent. According to John Hopkins Medicine, the average cost, based on an 80 mg dose, is $63 for a one-month supply. It is less likely than some of the other statins to interact with various medications, and needs to be taken in the evening.
Pravastatin
Better known as Pravachol, this statin is tied for second for efficacy in the opinion of John Hopkins Medicine. Prolipid.com seems to agree on this medication, ranking pravastatin second in efficacy as well when taken at the 40 mg dose, stating it lowers LDL cholesterol by 29 percent. It, like fluvastatin, appears unlikely to interact adversely with any other drugs you may be taking. It is, however, more costly at $117 for a one-month supply of a 40 mg dose.
Lovastatin
Tied with pravastatin for second by John Hopkins Medicine, lovastatin (Mevacor), is actually ranked No. 1 by Prolipid.com; its efficacy, according to the site, is 37 percent for lowering your LDL cholesterol. While effective, it may interact with drugs such as anti-fungals, erythromycin and cyclosporine. There is an upside. While the cost per month for 40 mg is $122, this drug is available generically for $63.
Simvastatin
John Hopkins gives this drug, known also as Zocor, a three for efficacy, while Prolipid.com ties it for No. 1 with pravastatin, stating that at the 40 mg dose it lowers your LDL by 37 percent. Simvastatin is similar to pravastatin in its drug interactions; if you take erythromycin, cyclosporine or use anti-fungals, you may experience adverse side effects. The cost for a one-month supply of 20 mg tablets is $117, and no generic prescription is available.
