5 Ways to Recognize Symptoms of a Gynecologic Disorder

1. Know If Something's Wrong

Good gynecological health is important for women of all ages. Your gynecological health affects your sex drive, reproduction chances and your overall well-being. Regular checkups with the gynecologist, good hygiene and a healthy lifestyle can help keep you healthy. But if something is wrong, it's important to know how to recognize symptoms of a gynecologic disorder.

2. Take a Look

Every woman should be familiar enough with the look and feel of her own body to be able to detect abnormalities, so one of the easiest possible symptoms of a gynecologic disorder to recognize is abnormal appearance. Take time during your daily shower to inspect your genital area and look for anything out of the ordinary. Discoloration, swelling, tenderness, bumps or a rash could be symptoms of a gynecologic disorder.

3. Recognize Redness

Excess redness in and around your genital area could indicate a gynecologic disorder. Coloration changes naturally with your body's chemistry and temperature, but infection can cause tissue in the genital area to look extra red or inflamed. Tissue and skin around the irritated area also becomes very red and could become swollen in appearance. If you notice a rash or red bumps anywhere that can't be attributed to everyday causes like shaving or waxing, take note of where these appear and if they increase in size or redness. Itching or burning when you urinate might also be a sign of infection.

4. Don't Rule Out Discharge

Vaginal discharge could be a sign of a gynecologic disorder. Discharge is healthy in most women and is not uncommon, but regular discharge should be odorless, colorless and occur in small quantities. If your discharge has an odor, milky or cloudy appearance, becomes thick, or occurs frequently it could be a sign that something is wrong. Your body could be using the discharge to try to remove bacteria instead of just lubricating itself naturally.

5. Check Your Cycle

Changes to your menstrual cycle can occur for a variety of reasons from aging to stress, but a gynecologic disorder can also cause significant changes to your menstrual cycle. A disorder could make your cycle become heavier than normal or irregular. You might also experience worse cramping than you're used to or notice spotting between periods. If you notice any of these changes to your menstrual cycle, talk to your gynecologist.
