4 Ways to Dress for Tap Dancing

1. Time for Tap

Tap dancing is an enjoyable form of dance and has experienced an increase in popularity in recent years. Before starting a tap class, you'll definitely want to make sure you're properly prepared. Dress for tap dancing by wearing the right dance clothing and footwear. You'll increase your efficiency during practice by being properly prepared and make your instructor's job of critiquing easier as well.

2. What to Wear

It's important to dress lightly for dance practice. You need to be able to see your silhouette in the mirrors, and your instructor needs to be able to see it as well. Baggy clothing can distract your instructor and make it difficult to critique your performance. Wear dance tights and a solid colored bodysuit. You can wear a sheer dance skirt if you prefer, but avoid sweatpants, shorts or baggy clothing.

3. Tap Dance, Tap Class, Tap Shoes

You can't tap dance without tap shoes. Buy a pair of properly fitting tap shoes. Choose tap shoes in the same size as your dress shoe. Make sure you remove your tap any other shoes from your dance bag at the end of the day to let them air out. Doing so will eliminate odors and prolong their life. Tan is a popular color for tap shoes because this color can be worn with a wide variety of dance costumes. This is particularly important for dancers who have short costume changes during a performance. Using the same shoe for each dance reduces the time it takes to dress.

4. It's Showtime

Dressing for a dance performance usually varies from how you dress for dance class. Dance performances usually require a costume, and costumes that aren't custom-designed sometimes require alterations. Make sure you try on your dance costume well in advance of your performance so that you have enough time for alterations to be made. Also, practice at least once in your costume prior to your performance so that you can determine if the costume fits well and stays put during your actual routine. Hair accessories should be secured so that they don't fall off during your performance. Wear the same colored tights and dance shoes if you want to give the appearance of longer legs.
