Acne occurs when the sebaceous glands in the skin produce too much sebum. This oily substance can block the pores which can erupt into inflamed pustules. Severe cases can result in acne scars in the skin. Acne scars may also be cleared by removing the upper layers of skin in some manner. Acne can be treated by include applying medication to the skin to clear the pores.
Step 1
Use a chemical peel. Apply the solution to your skin and peel it off after about 15 minutes. A chemical peel contains an acid such as glycolic acid that breaks the bonds between the skin cells on the skin's surface. This allows the top layer of skin to be removed with the chemical peel.
Step 2
Consider dermabrasion. Dermabrasion uses mechanical means to remove the upper layers of skin. The scars will be much fainter when the skin grows back. A typical dermabrasion tool has a diamond-tipped head that rotates at extremely high speed. This technique requires a high degree of skill on the part of the operator.
Step 3
Receive laser resurfacing. A laser ablates (vaporizes) the skin with heat and is a more recent technological development than dermabrasion. Laser resurfacing generally provides more consistent results than dermabrasion since it doesn't rely as much on the operator's skill.
Step 4
Apply acne medication to the skin. Topical treatments in the form of lotions, gels and creams may be used for mild cases of acne to keep the pores clear. They contain active ingredients such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
Step 5
Use antibiotics to kill bacteria that may cause acne. You can apply antibiotics topically or take them orally. Antibiotics are best suited for moderate cases of acne that are widespread. Typical antibiotics for the treatment of acne include tetracycline, doxycycline, erythromycin, minocycline, trimethoprim and azithromycin.
