How to Fade Acne Scars Using Home Remedies

Acne scars are caused by chronically picking and popping acne pustules and blackheads, and can remain on the skin for weeks to months after the acne has healed. Since the skin of acne scars can be more thick and dry than the surrounding skin, it is necessary to eliminate the scarred and discolored skin by following a plan that softens the area, sloughs off the dislodged skin, and rebuilds the skin cells underneath.

Step 1

Soften the area that contains acne scarring by applying an olive oil facial. Pour 2 tbsp. of olive oil into the hands, then spread the olive oil onto the face. Use the fingers to massage the olive oil in deeply, focusing on the areas that contain the most scars. After 2 or 3 minutes, fill a large bowl or basin with nearly boiling water, and lean 12 to 18 inches over the bowl. Cover the head with a towel, which will cause the steam to envelope the face, further softening the skin and loosening scarred tissue. After 5 minutes, use a damp washcloth to wipe away the oil. Use an olive oil facial 3 times per week.

Step 2

Slough away the softened and dislodged skin by applying a natural scrub. Pour 1 tbsp. of baking soda into the hands, and drizzle around 1 tsp, of water onto it. A paste will form. Spread the paste onto wet skin, and massage it around the face using small, circular movements with the fingers. After 2 minutes, rinse off the skin with water. It is important to use a natural scrub, such as baking soda, which is made of smooth particulates that will not scrape or damage the skin. Use a baking soda scrub 2 or 3 times per week.

Step 3

Rebuild the underlying skin cells by applying a toner high in vitamin C. Soak 5 or 6 cotton pads in concentrated lemon juice, and place them around the face. Let the lemon juice pads sit on the skin for 5 to 7 minutes, then remove the pads to allow the skin to dry naturally. Apply this lemon juice compress 3 times per week. Lemon juice is highly concentrated in vitamin C, which supports new skin cell growth and aids the skin in becoming more balances and evenly toned. Applying lemon juice to the skin routinely is a natural way to smooth and tone the skin.
