Age spots are normally caused by the overproduction of skin pigmentation, also known as melanin, as skin ages. Melanin gives your skin a yellowish to blackish color. Overexposure to the sun's UVA rays play a large role in the appearance of age spots, stimulating melanin production to defend the skin from the sun's damaging rays. There is no cure for age spots, but there are treatments that can reduce their appearance and fade the spots, giving your skin a clearer surface.
Step 1
Undergo dermabrasion. A dermabrasion procedure exfoliates the top layer of skin, called the epidermis, and removes dead skin cells as well as the pigmentation causing the age spots.
Step 2
Purchase an alpha hydroxy peel from your dermatologist or beautician. Alpha hydroxy peels lighten the skin as the acid works to peel away the blemished skin, exposing new, fresh skin underneath. This may take two or more visits before age spots are gone.
Step 3
Opt for photon light therapy at your dermatologist's office. In photon light therapy, a LED light is directed at the age spots and the melanin absorbs the light, prodding the skin to heal itself naturally. There are kits sold to the public for home use, yet it is highly advisable to seek professional treatments.
Step 4
Purchase a skin bleaching cream that contains retinoids. These creams can be found at drugstores. Bleaching creams work by fading discolored skin a little at a time until it is unnoticeable.
Step 5
Consult a plastic surgeon or dermatologist about laser treatments. If you have had no luck with conventional treatments, laser treatment can be your saving grace. A low intensity laser is passed over the age spot, removing the discoloration from the epidermis. Lasers are not meant for large areas of discoloration.
