Benefits of Organic Baby Food

If you buy only one person in your family organic food this year, make it your baby. According to "Consumer Reports" magazine, organic baby food is one of the foods where buying organic is worth it--even if it costs a little more. Opting for organic baby food is a good choice for the environment, but the benefits of organic baby food go beyond eco-friendliness.

Fewer Pesticides

Baby food may be especially susceptible to toxins because of the way it is made: Fruits and vegetables are condensed to create baby food, which may also increase the concentration of pesticides in the resulting baby food, according to "Consumer Reports." For babies, whose brains and bodies are still developing, even trace amounts of pesticides could have long-term health effects.

Fewer Hormones

Cattle and poultry farmers sometimes use hormones to stimulate growth and production in the animals they raise, but organic farmers avoid using hormones. This is a good thing for babies, who can be affected by those trace amounts of added hormones, which have the potential to cause cancer and early onset of puberty.

Better Nutrition

Organic baby food may contain more phytochemicals than food that isn't organically produced, according to the American Dietetic Association (ADA). There has not been enough conclusive research done to absolutely say that you'll get more nutritional value from organic food, but early research suggests there are benefits.

Better Taste

Your baby might be more likely to eat a variety of foods if he likes the way they taste, and some people say that they prefer the taste of organic food, according to the ADA. Offering your baby a variety of healthy foods is the cornerstone for a healthy diet, according to the Mayo Clinic.
