There are two main types of acne scars: depressed and raised. Both require extensive treatment in order to be erased. The severity of the scars plays an important role on how effective the treatments are. While much can be done at home to diminish their appearance, some severe cases may require medical intervention in the form of surgery or other invasive treatments in order to be eradicated.
Step 1
Apply ice cubes directly over the scars if they seem inflamed and raised. The ice will shrink pore size and reduce any redness or inflammation present. While this is not a permanent solution, it will temporarily improve the look and feel of the scars.
Step 2
Make your own face mask using tomatoes, cucumber or egg whites. Place slices or mash and then dab a cotton ball on the juice. Apply directly over the scars and let stay on them for a few minutes. These items tighten the skin, reducing the appearance of scars.
Step 3
Look for gels and creams that can be used to reduce inflammation, control itching and reduce the scar's size. Look for creams containing alpha hydroxy acids and retinoids, which speeds up cellular regeneration and helps slough off dead or damaged skin. Beta hydroxy acids are a good option if you still have acne, as it will help dry out excess oil from your skin.
Step 4
Apply lemon or lime juice directly over the scars using a cotton ball. This is especially helpful in the case of darkened scars, since lemon juice bleaches skin.
Step 5
Use a mix of essential oils to dab on the scars. Good options include lavender or fenugreek oils. Apply at least twice a day and wait for the skin to absorb the oil. Do not rinse off. You can also apply olive oil to help moisturize the skin and diminish the appearance of scars, which is more evident on dry skin.
Step 6
Talk to your dermatologist about treatments available. Common options include laser resurfacing and cryotherapy (freezing of the scars) for raised scars and fillers, chemical peels and microdermabrasion for depressed scars.
