How to Reduce Dark Spots on the Face

Dark spots, also known as age spots, are marks caused by sun damage, usually in people over 40. While they can appear in different parts of the body, including the hands, they are especially bothersome when they show up on the face, since little can be done to hide them and many will be visible even after application of makeup. Dark sports can also be temporary, caused by a fluctuation in hormones during pregnancy or when taking birth control pills. In these cases, however, they tend to disappear on their own over time.

Step 1

Dab lemon juice directly on the dark spots. The acid in the juice can help fade the dark coloring, although it will take about two months of twice-daily applications before you will start seeing any improvements. Apple cider vinegar mixed with the juice of an onion works as well when applied to the spot.

Step 2

Apply aloe vera gel on the spots once a day, preferably at night. Let it air-dry, then apply an anti-aging or deep moisturizing skin cream before going to bed.

Step 3

Use lightening creams. These are over-the-counter creams meant to treat dark spots on the face. If the spots are too big or dark, ask your dermatologist for a prescription, as there are stronger products available.

Step 4

Use sunscreen every time you go out. This will prevent your skin from developing new spots, but will also prevent the existing ones from getting darker. This is especially important if you are doing lightening treatments, since your skin is then more sensitive to burning and more likely to darken faster.

Step 5

Mash a raw papaya or cucumber and apply directly over the spots. Let stay for a few minutes before you wash it off with cool water. Repeat every day for at least a month to see results.
